An infographic titled "Define The Objective" showing two men discussing key questions for defining a machine's purpose, including problem, user, goals, conditions, and constraints.

Before designing anything, we must clearly answer:

  • What problem are we solving?

  • Who is the user?

  • What must the machine accomplish?

  • Under what conditions will it operate?

  • What constraints exist (cost, size, power, safety)?

This prevents designing something impressive but too expensive or even worse… useless.

Define The Objective

Concept Development

Once the objective is clear, we begin:

  • Brainstorming multiple approaches

  • Sketching mechanisms

  • Comparing alternatives

  • Evaluating feasibility

At this stage, we’re not calculating details yet — We’re thinking in terms of principles and mechanisms:

  • Gears vs belts?

  • Electric motor vs hydraulic actuator?

  • Linkage vs cam mechanism?

Quantity of ideas matters early — refinement comes later.

At this stage, we :

  • Create complete CAD models of all components

  • Select materials based on strength, cost, and the environment the design will be in.

  • Choose standard parts (bearings, fasteners, motors, gears, etc.)

  • Specify tolerances and fits between components

  • Apply Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) to ensure proper assembly

  • Prepare technical drawings and a Bill of Materials (BOM)

  • Perform precise calculations for stresses, forces, and motion (If Required)

The goal is to have a fully defined, buildable design that meets all requirements.

Why Hiram Innovations

Every company operates differently. Some handle all manufacturing in-house, while others outsource certain processes. Our goal is to remain nimble and adaptable, allowing us to support each customer in the way that best fits their operations—whether that means collaborating with their existing vendors or helping them identify the right partners to bring their ideas to life.

No matter the approach, we support our customers from start to finish. We tailor our level of involvement to meet each project’s needs, ensuring a smooth process and successful outcome for everyone involved.
